The 5th grade string performance for Stark's class will be on December 7th during our Monday morning assembly at 8:30 in the gym. If you cannot make the performance we will try and video tape it and post it to this website for viewing. 

Dear Fifth Grade students and families,

As you may have heard, the Bellingham School district is adding strings instruction for all fifth graders this year.  One of our key district outcomes from the Bellingham Promise is to prepare “artists, performers and trades people.  We believe that learning music and art is not just an “add on” for student learning, but rather it is an essential part of becoming an educated person.  As a part of that commitment, we believe every student in our district should be given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. 

Your school’s strings teacher, Mrs. Smith will be coming through the fifth grade classrooms to demonstrate violin, viola and cello and give you some specific information about when the strings classes will be taught.  Our goal is to ensure that every student has a minimum of a trimester of strings instruction this year, twice per week, during the school day.  Your child will be notified of when string instruction will start.

The school district does own a number of instruments (violins and a few violas), and we are adding to our stock of instruments each year.  We are also committed to providing an instrument for every student who needs one.  We are asking that families who have the financial ability to rent an instrument to do so this year, as we build our cache of district-owned instruments.  Music books and stands are provided by the school district.  Instrument rentals are available from several strings shops in the Bellingham area who have agreed to rent instruments for the duration of the strings classes.  Rental violins and violas run from approximately $15-$30 per month.  Cello rentals start at about $35 per month.   Please indicate below whether you will be renting an instrument or whether you would like the use of a school-provided instrument.  No student will be without an instrument--we are committed to providing an instrument for every child who needs one.
